Understanding the NEET Counselling Process

After NEET results are declared, qualified students must go through a counselling process to secure a medical seat. The counselling is not automatic you must register, fill preferences, and participate in the allocation rounds. Missing a deadline or filling wrong preferences can cost you a seat even if you have a great rank.
  • Conducted by MCC

  • The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) conducts AIQ counselling for 15% of government medical college seats across all states.

  • This also includes 100% seats of AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC, and central university institutions (BHU, AMU, DU).

  • Who should apply: Every NEET qualified student even if you prefer your state quota

  • Registration: MCC portal (mcc.nic.in)

  • Key Rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Mop-Up Round, Stray Vacancy Round

  • Important: AIQ registration is separate and must not be skipped

  • Conducted by State Authorities

  • The remaining 85% of government medical college seats are filled through state quota counselling, conducted separately by each state’s authority.

  • Students from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will primarily use:

    • Telangana: TGNMC (Telangana State Medical Colleges Admission Process)

    • Andhra Pradesh: APNMC (Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences)

  • Karnataka: KEA (Karnataka Examination Authority)

  • Other states: Respective State Medical Counselling Committees

  • State counselling has its own eligibility criteria, domicile requirements, document submission timelines, and preference-filling protocols. Each state is different. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons students lose valid seats.
